Puberty & Growing Up

Puberty usually starts between 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys. Talking early, before changes begin, makes it easier for everyone.

For girls: first periods, skincare and growing up

Periods usually start about 2 years after breasts begin to develop, often around age 12. Pack a small kit for the school bag before the first one arrives.

Irregular cycles are common for the first 1–2 years. See your pediatrician if periods haven't started by 15, soak a pad every hour, or bring pain that stops daily life.

For acne, gentle cleansing twice a day and a non-comedogenic moisturizer are the base. Ask the pediatrician if acne is painful or leaving marks.

For boys: hygiene, growth spurts and body changes

Body odor often shows up first. A daily shower and deodorant, fresh socks and clean sports gear go a long way.

Boys' biggest growth spurt tends to come later than girls', around ages 13–15. Big appetites and clumsiness are normal.

Voice cracks, some breast swelling and nighttime wet dreams are all common and usually temporary. Let him know he can ask questions.

For every child: talking about bodies

Use correct names for body parts, keep conversations short and frequent, and share a good book if talking face to face feels awkward.

Body image matters. Focus on what bodies can do, not how they look, and watch for skipped meals or extreme exercise.

Every child develops on their own timeline. See the pediatrician if signs of puberty appear before 8 in girls or 9 in boys, or there are no signs by 13 in girls or 14 in boys.
