Tantrum vs. meltdown decoder

A tantrum is usually about wanting something, and your child still has some control. A meltdown is an overwhelmed nervous system, and your child has run out of control. They need different responses.

  1. 1. Did it start after hearing "no" or not getting something?
  2. 2. Does your child check whether you're watching?
  3. 3. Does it stop quickly once they get what they wanted?
  4. 4. Was the place loud, bright, crowded or new?
  5. 5. Does your child seem unable to hear you or respond, even to comfort?
  6. 6. Did it continue long after the trigger was gone?
